SUCCESS STORY

Shenica Balgobin

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) – Economics; minor Accounting

What is your career?

I am an Educator with the Division of Education, Research and Technology teaching Economics and Accounts.

What was your area of study?

My area of study was Economics and Accounting

What qualifications is needed for your career path?

To become an educator in Trinidad and Tobago, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field, and experience as a teacher. You may also need to demonstrate knowledge of teaching methods and child safety laws.

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field from a recognized university;
  • A Teacher’s Diploma;
  • A minimum of five CSEC (CXC) passes in General Proficiency Subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and a Science.

What motivated your choice of study and career path?

My interest in economics stemmed from a lifelong fascination with the mechanics of money. I have always been curious about how money is created, how it circulates within economies and how it shapes individual and societal outcomes. This curiosity naturally led me to explore economic systems, market dynamics, and the factors that contribute to wealth creation and inequality.

While I initially pursued accounting in secondary school, my passion for economics solidified during my sixth-form studies at Signal Hill Secondary School. It was there that I was introduced to economics as a discipline that deals with complex systems and interactions. The field’s ability to provide a framework for understanding human behaviour, social dynamics, and the global economy proved incredibly stimulating and intellectually rewarding. The analytical and problem-solving aspects of economics, involving data analysis, trend identification, and developing solutions to economic challenges, perfectly align with my intellectual interests.

How has DATAS’ Scholarship, Grant or Bursary impacted your experience.

The bursary I received from the Department of Advanced Training and Advisory Services (DATAS) played a pivotal role in my academic success. By providing financial support, it alleviated a significant financial burden, particularly the living costs associated with living away from home, while pursuing my studies. The DATAS Bursary enabled me to focus on my studies without the added stress of financial insecurity, ultimately contributing to a more positive and productive academic experience.

 How was the follow up support at DATAS?

I was impressed by the quality of follow-up support
offered by DATAS, which was timely, informative, and instrumental in my
academic journey.

 How did you plan for additional financial support?

In addition to the financial support provided by my parents, I was also a
recipient of the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (G.A.T.E) program,
which further assisted in covering educational costs.

Describe your journey, and the efforts made to be where you are now.

My journey has been a testament to the power of faith and perseverance. Navigating the challenges of pursuing a degree during the pandemic was undoubtedly difficult. Online classes, shifting deadlines, and the isolation of remote learning presented unique hurdles. However, throughout this period, I firmly believed in God’s guidance and provision.

I dedicated myself to my studies, adapting to the new realities of online learning. I sought support from my professors, engaged in online study groups, and utilized every resource available to me. There were moments of doubt and discouragement, but I drew strength from my faith and the support of my loved ones.

I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way, and I believe that God has blessed me with the ability and the privilege to share my knowledge with the next generation. I am excited to embark on this new chapter as an Economics Teacher, and I am committed to inspiring and empowering my students to become critical thinkers and responsible citizens.

What do you like best about your job?

I am deeply motivated by the belief that education has the power to transform lives. The opportunity to contribute, even in a small way, to my students’ journey towards reaching their full potential is incredibly rewarding. Witnessing that “aha!” moment when a student finally grasps a challenging concept is an exhilarating experience. Building strong relationships with each student, understanding their unique interests, and fostering a supportive classroom environment are the cornerstones of my teaching philosophy. I am constantly learning and evolving as an educator, seeking new strategies, refining my teaching methods, and engaging in reflective practice to ensure I provide the best possible learning experience for my students.

How did you get your job?

I was encouraged to apply for this position by one of my former Secondary School Teachers.
