I had to be patient before getting my current job. After applying at the TRHA head office, it could have been eighteen months to two years before I was called for my interview for this current job. During that time, I worked as an Instructor at MIC Tobago, where I also learned a lot and I am still grateful to have had that opportunity. Ultimately though, my passion is working hands-on in the engineering field, so I took this opportunity.
If I could do it all over again, I do not think I would have it any other way. Maybe I would eliminate some of the bad experiences but ultimately, I would take the same path. What I would do differently, however, is try harder to get more relevant work experience in my younger years. This is easier said than done but in hindsight, I believe I could have done more.
For anyone hoping to pursue a career path in engineering, my advice is to first love your career field. Many times during the journey, it would get so difficult, that you may reconsider your choice. The only thing then that would keep you on course is your reason for choosing that field of study initially. Money cannot be your only driving force.
Secondly, try to learn as much as possible along the way. Sometimes what separates you from others is your knowledge base and your competence in key areas. Also, do not be afraid to learn things outside of your field of study. In the real world, being a well-rounded person is paramount.
