Bachelor of Arts in Dance
Aquisia has over twenty-five years of experience as a professional folk dancer, particularly in the art of limbo. Her specialized skills in limbo have afforded her a wealth of international performance opportunities. She has performed extensively in every hotel on the island of Tobago on different occasions for official and festive functions. Her travelling experiences are regional and international entertaining audiences through her art in the Caribbean, Europe and USA. Her drive and passion for dance ultimately lead her to apply to the Department of Advanced Training and Advisory Services (DATAS) for a bursary which has allowed her to successfully pursue and complete a certificate in Dance and Dance Education, and later a degree in Dance Education both at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad.
The degree in Dance Education was one of her biggest accomplishments which has broadened her scope in dance and knowledge of the performing arts. As a dancer for many years, one of her aspirations was to develop dance on the island of Tobago. As such, in her first year of the bachelor’s degree programme, she started a dance company called the Tobago Alpha Dance Academy through which she created a dance education programme. Although it primarily focused on dance, the Academy has been involved in general artistic and creative activities, with a view of providing greater cultural education in Tobago and elsewhere. The Academy has participated in the Tobago Heritage Festival since its inception and has mounted two major dance productions since 2013. It has provided entertainment in folk dance and limbo to several major hotels in Tobago.
Her knowledge of dance developed beyond the folk arena. She has been a frequent Liturgical Dancer for the Anglican community in Tobago, and provides on-site coaching to young women from the church interested in liturgical dance.
In recognition of her contribution to dance in Tobago, a sculpture was created, in her honour by Louise Kimmie of Germany and Donieski of Cuba, which is erected in the lobby of Mt Irvine Hotel. The name of the sculpture is simply, Aquisia!
