SUCCESS STORY

Akimo Sandy

Resident Dancer

Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.FA) – Performing Arts (Dance)

  1. What inspired you to pursue studies in Dance (Performing Arts), and what steps did you take to achieve your goal?

Growing up, I was always told to follow my dreams and that if God blessed me with a gift, I should pursue it to its fullest potential. Dance was that gift for me.

Initially, I wanted to be a chef – I have always had a deep love for the Culinary Arts. But when I was introduced to dance in secondary school, everything changed. Dance became more than just a passion; it was a calling that led me to opportunities I never could have imagined. Choosing dance was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I am truly happy with that choice.

Being the first in my family to venture into the performing arts at this level, my journey was filled with milestones. My grandmother, who always encouraged me to stay true to my calling, was my biggest inspiration to pursue dance professionally. Her belief in me fueled my determination.

Through perseverance and dedication, I eventually earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performing Arts, making me the first in my family to hold a tertiary degree. Even though I was unable to attend the institution of my first choice, I am still extremely grateful for the opportunity I received, especially with the support of Department of Advanced Training and Advisory Services (DATAS), which made it possible.

That said, I truly believe I am talented and gifted, and I can accomplish anything I set my mind to creatively. Whether it is dance, makeup, design or even cooking, I embrace every skill and passion that allows me to express myself and share my artistry with the world.

  1. How did you plan financially to achieve your goal?

To be honest, my initial plan was simply to start and trust the process – allowing things to flow naturally. Along the way, I worked as a dancer and took on private gigs that helped supplement my income. Thankfully, the nature of my art provided opportunities to earn while studying. Additionally, receiving assistance from DATAS played a crucial role in stabilizing my financial situation and ensuring that I could focus on my studies without overwhelming stress.

  1. What challenges did you experience?

Fortunately, I did not face many significant challenges during my studies. One of the reasons for this was my ability to secure private dance jobs that provided me with extra income. However, like many students, managing daily expenses such as rent and groceries was a constant concern. These needs could have been major obstacles if not for the support I received.

  1. What strategies did you use to overcome these challenges?

My main strategy was to keep myself engaged and active within the creative community. By continuing to dance professionally while studying, I was able to manage my financial responsibilities. I also practiced discipline with my earnings to ensure that my basic needs were covered. Staying connected to my craft was not just a means of income but also a source of motivation to keep going.

  1. How did DATAS make a difference in you overcoming these challenges?

DATAS made an incredible difference in my life. It provided me with essential support, covering critical needs such as groceries and rent. These were significant financial burdens that could have derailed my studies. With DATAS’ help, I was able to focus on excelling academically and artistically without the added pressure of wondering where my next meal would come from or how I would keep a roof over my head.

  1. Describe a specific moment when you realized the impact of this support on your journey.

I vividly remember a moment when I was unsure how I would manage to pay my rent for that month. I had gigs lined up, but the payments were delayed. Just when I was beginning to feel overwhelmed, I received assistance from DATAS. That support immediately relieved my stress and allowed me to continue focusing on my classes and performances. It was in that moment that I fully grasped how essential DATAS was to helping me stay afloat during my academic journey.

  1. What message would you share with others considering your career path?

The message I would share is simple yet powerful: follow your dreams relentlessly. If you stay true to your passion and work consistently toward your goals, success will surely follow. Do not be discouraged by obstacles or setbacks; trust your journey and never underestimate the value of your gifts. MIND YOUR BUSINESS DON’T LISTEN TO NOISE!!!

  1. How has this opportunity changed your outlook on the future, and what are your plans moving forward?

This opportunity has completely transformed my outlook on life and my career. Today, I am proudly employed in my chosen field as a Dance Resident at the Tobago Performing Arts Company. This role allows me to share my art with others while continuing to grow.

Beyond dance, I am also building my brand as a makeup artist and designer, merging my love for transformation and creativity. Through Siah’s Atelier, I aim to bring artistry to life, whether on stage or in everyday expression.

Looking ahead, my goal is to travel the world, showcasing my craft and sharing the rich cultural values of Tobago and Trinidad through dance, beauty and design. I aspire to inspire others the way I was inspired, proving that with dedication and the right support, dreams do come true.
