SUCCESS STORY

Jermilia D. Guy

Radiographer

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) – Radiography

1. What inspired you to pursue studies in Radiography, and what steps did you take to achieve your goal?

From a young age, I was fascinated by the intersection of healthcare and technology. I wanted a career that would allow me to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives while working in a dynamic and evolving field. Radiography stood out to me because of its critical role in diagnosing and treating medical conditions. To achieve my goal, I enrolled in the B. Sc. Radiography program at College of Science, Technology & Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT), committing myself to both theoretical studies and hands-on clinical training. Balancing coursework with hospital-based practical sessions allowed me to develop the necessary skills and experience to excel in the field.

2. How did you plan financially to achieve your goal?

Pursuing my studies required careful financial planning. I explored various funding options, including scholarships, grants, bursaries, and loans. The financial assistance provided by the Department of Advanced Training and Advisory Services (DATAS) was instrumental in covering rent, living expenses, books, and essential supplies, allowing me to focus on my education without constant financial stress. Additionally, I worked part-time and managed my expenses wisely to ensure I could sustain myself throughout my studies.

3. What challenges did you experience?

One of my biggest challenges was balancing academics, clinical training, and financial responsibilities. The demanding schedule of radiography studies required long hours of study, practical training, and exams. Additionally, the cost of specialized books, equipment, and transportation to clinical sites added financial strain.

4. What strategies did you use to overcome these challenges?

To manage my workload effectively, I developed strong time management skills, creating a structured schedule that balanced study time, clinical practice, and personal well-being. I also formed study groups with classmates, which reinforced learning and provided emotional support. Financially, I budgeted carefully, applied for grants and scholarships, and took on flexible work opportunities to support myself.

5. How did DATAS make a difference in you overcoming these challenges?

DATAS provided essential financial relief, significantly reducing my financial stress. This assistance allowed me to focus fully on my education and clinical training without constantly worrying about expenses. Having this support gave me the motivation and stability I needed to push through challenges and remain committed to my studies.

6. Describe a specific moment when you realized the impact of this support on your journey.

A defining moment was when I successfully completed my final clinical rotation at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. This period was particularly demanding, requiring my full dedication. Without the financial assistance from DATAS, I would have struggled to afford the necessary resources that allowed me to be at the hospital daily for extended hours to meet my clinical requirements. At that moment, I felt immense gratitude, realizing that the support I received enabled me to stay focused, gain invaluable hands-on experience, and move closer to achieving my dream.

7. What message would you share with others considering your career path?

Radiography is a rewarding and impactful career that blends science, technology, and patient care. If you have a passion for healthcare and enjoy problem-solving, this field offers incredible opportunities for growth. The journey can be challenging, but with perseverance, time management, and the right support systems – like DATAS – you can overcome obstacles and succeed. Believe in yourself, stay committed, and embrace every learning opportunity along the way!
