Motto: Discipline Nurtures Development

Welcome!

Welcome back to school in this new online environment. We are together entering a new space and a new mode and we all have our anxieties. It has been a long period of uncertainty, changing policies and where plans made did not always succeed. I am sorry we could not have been closer during this time to provide the comfort you needed and deserve as parents of our students. We are now preparing to engage our students virtually and I thank you for your patience.

School Profile

The agents of change and development at Goodwood Secondary School (GSS) are the teachers and school leaders who through collaboration with students, parents and other stakeholders impact student outcomes. Reflective self-evaluation is therefore necessary for every stakeholder to give meaningful input into the transformational process. The assessment of GSS examines the four fundamental aspects of our operation; people, plant, process and resources at both the micro and macro levels.

The school philosophy is clear on discipline and cleanliness and embraces the core values as outlined in the school’s handbook, reiterated in school documents and talked about with the school community including at PTA meetings.

HISTORY

Goodwood Secondary School opened its doors at the Signal Hill Secondary School in 2000 under the ‘School for All’ initiative of the then United National Congress government. It was called the Scarborough Secondary Centre. In 2003 the School moved into its current location in Goodwood as the Goodwood High School with first and third forms. The school remained a five -year institution until 2008 when the sixth form was started. The government subsequently (2015) designated that it bears the name Goodwood Secondary School.

The years 2000 to 2008 saw an era under the leadership of the first Principal Mrs Agnes Murray-Thomas where the school was characterised by discipline, cleanliness and a pristine environmental presence. The school would have won several clean school awards. The focus promoted by the second Principal resulted in the school being considered a magnet school for Visual and Performing Arts until 2013. The current intent is to develop an institution where practice and policy interact rigorously to ensure the holistic needs of each student are met in the teaching and learning process to nurture self-sufficiency.

PHILOSOPHY

Goodwood Secondary School has been founded on the principle of discipline as a foundational element for the development of the whole child long before ‘whole child’ strategies became buzz words. There were and continue to be rigorous attempts to maintain a pristine physical environment. The grounds are well maintained to provide arguably the most scenic secondary school campus in Tobago.

The students must be disciplined in the adherence to the uniform codes and attendance. The belief in discipline extends to the need for students to commit to working hard and working consistently, academically. Our school believes in partnering with parents and stipulates that attendance at Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings be a requirement for graduation from the school in year five.

Communication with the home is therefore fluid and on-going. A small intimate instructional environment is the goal as teachers can better engage in differentiation to cater to the needs of each student. Smaller class sizes and a move towards three classes per form level was then an initiative about which school leaders dialogued with Division of Education Youth Affairs and Sport (DEYAS) administrators in in 2015 and 2016. This has been achieved with the largest class having 27 students in the 2020 form one year. The objective is under threat with the proposed increase in student assigned without any plan to address the infrastructural deficiencies. Finally, the aim is to provide a diverse technical curriculum that caters to the needs of the students at our school. Students must leave with an entrepreneurial focus of self-sufficiency, whether heading into tertiary studies or immediate employment.

The rationale in the formulation of this school development plan is therefore to provide an assessment of the current status of the school and use that as the baseline to build a framework for the advancement of the goals and objectives over the next three years. The challenge in collecting and processing the data remotely in a pandemic must be registered. The plan is presented in various sub-sections for easy monitoring and evaluation that are linked to iterated improved student outcomes.

VISION
Goodwood Secondary School will empower all learners to achieve their maximum potential in a digitally driven, Globally focused, Secure, Entrepreneurial and Caring (GSEC) environment.

MISSION
To provide all students with an outstanding educational experience that encourages the development of innovation and excellence in academics, arts, sports, technical and entrepreneurial skills through, relevance and rigor, relationships with all stakeholders, social competency development as a foundation for positive societal contribution.
